In October, VPCT held its AGM and the Chair, Steve Nelson made his Chairs Report using the presentation below. The meeting was well attended and for the first time, was open to the public from which there were several people. Steve obviously talked through his presentation and VPCT believes is self explanatory without his words. You can see the work and improvements VPCT, along with FoVP, have made in the park in the last year which we hope you approve. Please click on this panel to open. Thanks. Yesterday, in the freezing morning 6 hardy Friends volunteered to weed more of the formal beds in the park. We managed to clear 5 more beds before frostbite kicked in and with the aid of lashings of hot coffee, generously provide by Richard, we all thawed out making a full recovery. We hope everyone will enjoy the formal gardens which we’ll be continuing to work on next year. Thanks for all your support and kind words. FoVP
On Sunday, 10th November, Friends held its annual Remembrance Sunday in the park at the Cenotaph. Once again we were honoured to have DR Yevgen Gorash, Chair of the Glasgow Branch of the Association of Ukranians in Great Britain (AUGB) and the eminent lawyer, Gillian Mawdsley, as our speakers. The event was well attended and this year, again, the weather was lovely late Autumn sunshine and not too cold.
At this time of year the birdboxes need cleaned out after all the family have flown the nest. About half the boxes out of 20 has been used but sadly, and to be expected, there was signs of one or two chicks not surviving and remaining in the nest.
Friends need to clean out the boxes to remove the old nests and reduce disease for Spring next year. Can you see some of the chicks feathers? Sat 21st sept 11am Whiteinch library Glasgow open doors event "Whiteinch the Liveable Neighbourhood “ with historical talk by Sandra Malcolm and exhibition of Whiteinch history and shops.
Victoria Park Community Trust are delighted to announce that the first phase of signage has been installed in the park, explaining the new plantings adjacent to the Expressway and on the north side of the park at VPD North. We hope park users will understand our plans to introduce new plants for their biodiversity for birds and bugs and more pleasing for our park users to screen the busy, noisy traffic. The signs explain the purpose of the plants and their importance in biodiversity.
The signs were kindly installed at no cost by Cairn Building Services by Harry and Lee. The details of each sign are shown below if anyone isn’t able to see the signs or is simply curious. Friends had another good day today doing our regular gardening, weeding, removing overgrown brambles, clearing paths and thanks to Gisela for litter picking around the Nature Walk and Westland. Today was a fine day and actually warm for October and we think we made a good impact on the tidying. Thanks to everyone. FoVP.
Friends thank the volunteers who came out on Wednesday afternoon to start the weeding of the formal flower beds. Funnily enough the Parkies were also out doing exactly the same so park users should see a big improvement although there’s still lots to do. We would also do more today but the forecast is heavy rain.
Some of the formal beds had been planted out with perennial shrubs after Parks had announced several years ago, that they could not maintain all the flower beds every year. Friends had agreed that about half the beds would be planted with shrubs and finished with mulch. The beds are now becoming weedy and Parks are not clearing these beds. Therefore Friends will need to carryout the task of weeding and caring for the shrubs every year in order to maintain the appearance of these beds. Friends must thank the volunteers who came out today to help tidy the Fossil Grove and do some litter clearing. The weather was very pleasant and we all worked hard. Our youngest volunteer was 4 and the oldest; well over three score years and ten. |
