Thanks to all volunteers who turned out. Litter picking, pond clearance, weeding and building rockery beds for fern planting. We removed rocks and logs from the pond and raked out loads of smelly mud to put on the beds as a mulch. We're experimenting with cutting down the green reedy stuff on one side of the bridge to see if that helps control its spread.
Friends Volunteer Saturday 29th April, 10-12am.
Dear Friends, we are asking for volunteers to come out this Saturday morning to do some weeding and possibly litter picking in Victoria Park. Do you have a spare hour or two and keen to help. You’ll benefit from the fresh air, good company, helping our local park and getting some ‘green gym’ exercise. We meet in front of the Fossil Grove building and get started at 10am. Tools and gloves etc will be provided. All we ask is you bring some lovely Spring weather to cheer us in the tasks. Thanks and looking forward to seeing you then. Convenor FoVP Our AGM has come round and this year, it will be held on:
Thursday 18th May 2023, 7. 00pm – 9.00 pm at St. Thomas Aquinas, Mitre Road We will start with a welcome from our Convenor followed by 3 excellent speakers as follows. We’re sure you’ll enjoy hearing their stories; I certainly am looking forward to the evening. 1. Sandra Malcolm: A history of Victoria Park and Surrounds 2. David Webster: Fossil Grove Building Essential Works 3. Steve Nelson: Victoria Park Community Trust Update We will have a short break so we can get together and exchange ideas. The AGM will follow with the usual agenda to vote in the office bearers plus other essential points. Our members input and advice is not just welcome but essential to our society. The Committee wishes to advise of their intention to have the Standing Order below appended to our constitution: Standing Order: 1) Spending Procedure: for all major Society spending i.e., not petty cash amounts (which can be agreed at a quorate Committee meeting on an ad hoc basis) a spending proposal will be brought to the Committee and a budget agreed. A quote would then be obtained and brought to the Committee for approval. The authorised spending can then proceed. This procedure can be altered for specific reasons agreed by the committee on an item by item basis. Documentation for spending must be made available to our Treasurer.” Members are asked to consider the above, ahead of the vote at our AGM. We look forward to seeing you all then. Robert McKay Convenor of FoVP Friends are arranging a volunteer day on Saturday 1st April at 10am. We will be doing our usual tidying, some limited weeding in the Fossil Grove and pond area and general litter picking.
One task, but only for strong and fit people is we want to remove the turf from one of the formal display beds near the pond but this does require some serious backbreaking work. Tools will be provided. Please meet with David Webster at the front of the Fossil Grove Building at 10am. Thanks and please look out for David. All help is seriously welcome. Sunday 9th April 1 pm
Meet at the Main Gates. Wear your Easter Bonnet.Bring an egg to roll; bring your friends; bring your family and see what fun Victoria Park is! For further information contact fovpglasgow@gmail.com A big thank you from the trustees of the Victoria Park Community Trust to the 60 or so volunteers who turned out to plant 750 shrubs along the park perimeter adjoining the Expressway.
We had volunteers from the Conservation Volunteers (who also provided the shrubs), the John Muir Trust, the Annexe in Partick and the Victoria Parkrun as well as FoVP members and other locals. Our best volunteer turnout ever, so the job was soon done! Friends and the community were overwhelmed on Thursday by the Glasgow Warriors rugby team, support staff and helpers carryout a major litter pick in the park and Nature Walk. The group split into 5 groups and tackled all the hot spots and a massive amount of litter was removed. Thanks to Jana and her team for their community support which all stemmed from a recent park walk and Jana seeing the litter. Friends must add that the City Parkies also do a great job, constantly litter picking and removal but concentrating on the popular park areas such as the pond, playing field and kids playground etc. Please be aware this is a continuing unending battle so that today’s clean area will be tomorrow’s mucky place! Never a dull moment but it would be nice to do something more constructive.
