Flower Beds under the Still Game Bench Hill

28/6/2024

Friends invite all our members and followers, when they next visit the park, to please come and see the recently cleared and newly planted flower bed (1st picture) just below the Still Game Bench hill and in front of the formal flower beds. This bed has been planted with locally sourced perennial plants but they won’t show their glory until next year after they have grown and spread. This bed is a great example of how FoVP membership funds are being used to enhance the park.

Last year Friends planted out the 2nd bed with wild flowers which were donated. This year the wild flowers are doing very well and a great display. As these plants are locally grown, nectar varieties (not all floral displays produce nectar) they are very friendly to our bugs, bees and insects which we must help. Thanks for all your support and go on make a visit.

The 2nd and wild flower bed does not have any mulch cover. This is because this bed is a habitat for solitary mining bees. The soil is very sandy allowing the bees to dig into the soil to lay their eggs. The soil in the first bed isn’t sandy and not suitable for mining bees and insects.

Friends of VP are holding our monthly volunteer gardening event this Saturday 22nd June 10-12.  We’ll be focusing on the Fossil Grove area as usual to restore it to its wonderful condition. The weather is looking good and warm so we suggest older light clothing and good shoes and drinking water. We have tools and gloves so apart from above just bring yourselves. We’ll meet in front of the Fossil House at 10am. Looking forward to seeing you there. Thanks. FoVP.
