Friends of Victoria park
Victoria Park is one of the finest parks in the city. We want to make sure it’s well cared for and improved at a time when the budget for parks is under severe pressure.
We keep in close touch with Glasgow City Council to highlight maintenance issues. We seek funding to make improvements for example for new play equipment. We organise volunteers to look after the rosebeds, plant wild flowers, improve habitat for the wild fowl and arrange other events.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact us.
We are determined to make sure that the former blaes pitches area which the council considered for commercial development in 2013 is fully integrated with the park as beautiful green space.
We are very keen to develop a beautiful fernery Fossil Grove, a major site of scientific interest. We had the pond at the fossil grove excavated and relined in clay earlier this year and we are now seeking funds to develop the gardens as a fernery. We also support efforts by the Fossil Grove Trust to have the Fossil House refurbished.
We participate in the Victoria Park Action Group - find out more about this here.
You can download our Constitution here (197 KB pdf file).
We have a small committee which meets monthly.
Our last AGM was held on 16 May 2018. This agreed we would campaign against current council plans to grass over 28 of the main flower beds.
Current committee
Chair: Michael Herrigan
Vice Chair: Elizabeth Brown
Secretary: Cathie Russell
Treasurer: Gail Herrigan
Other committee members: Duncan Spiers and David Webster.
Our former chair Richard East is now acting as volunteer adviser on our Fossil Grove Fern Garden Project and we have other active members who assist with events.
To join the friends, send us a completed application form. Membership is currently set at £5 per annum.
