Fossil Grove Fernery
Friends of Victoria Park have been leading a major project to develop and maintain a fernery in the old quarry and pond area to the west of the Fossil Grove to replace the previous ornamental bedding around the pond. Phase 1 in 2019 included clearance of the overgrown trees and vegetation, relining the pond with clay, providing a new bridge and the first phase of fern planting of planting took place in 2020 and 2021 and there are now over forty different ferns species and some redwood and ginko trees.
Further infill phases are being planned and volunteers are always required to weed, tidy and plant. The new pond lining leaks and we have to keep topping it up - and a rampant species of reed has taken over the pond and we are assessing ways to reduce its spread so as to give the frogs and newts some more water to swim about in!
