On an awful day, a ton of volunteers came to out complete the 30 tree planting project that all our wonderful donators help to provide. It was really important that the trees get planted but also supported by stakes as the later high winds would simply have blown them over. We even had our local MP, Patricia Ferguson and Ward Councillor, Eunis Yassemi, out and getting tired and dirty. But really wow thanks for getting the job done. Just a bit of advice to the volunteers: go and have a lie down with a steaming hot cuppa! 🤩🤩

Another brilliant volunteer day in beautiful weather; spot the magnolia tree on the RHS in full flower. Great turn out again although we need to bring down our average age from 70 to 30. So the Fossil Grove was tidied up, brambles cut back, paths cleared, wee bit of litter removed, little weeding done. Sowed wild flower seed in our Blaes area and hope for a great summer display. Finished off by a natter and coffee. But always more to do to help Parks keep our park beautiful. Next volunteer day is Wednesday 30th April 1.30-3.30 followed by lashings of hot coffee and maybe a cheeky wee ice cream. More youngsters please!! 😎
Last Saturday 15th March, in some lovely sunshine, Friends held another great volunteeer day and we had a good turnout of 11 volunteers including some young folk. We were gardening in the beds near the formal flower beds and had great fun with the weeding !!
So thanks to all our volunteers for helping. Both semi-circular beds cleared of weed. Some free mulch from the depot might be useful. Loads of mulch was barrowed round from the depot and we covered a couple of the pre-weeded bigger shrub beds in the main grass area. Looking forward to seeing you all at our next volunteer day. Hello to all our Friends.
Are you passionate about trees and enjoy working collaboratively? If so, would you like to volunteer your creative talents to help develop a tree trail for Victoria Park, using QR codes to link to different websites? The trail will be printed and available to the public as an educational tool. Initially a small group will develop a template but then handover to you to lead to complete for the remaining up to 30 trees. If you are interested, please PM us, briefly outlining any relevant experience. Thanks, FoVP. Friends are really grateful to all our volunteers who came out this morning to make a start to 2025 gardening tasks. We had an excellent turnout of 12 volunteers and cleared a huge amount of undergrowth and weeds. Looking forward to the litterpick event on Wednesday at 1.30.
On 24th January 2025, Scotland was hit by a serious storm which was categorised by the MetOffice as a Red Alert, danger to life. Wind speeds in excess of 120mph were recorded with Glasgow recording winds >90mph. The result was that many trees were toppled, trees split at the base or heavy limbs torn from their trunks. Many smaller branches were ripped off resulting in a significant amount of debris lying everywhere. Obviously homes and factories were damaged with external cladding being ripped off buildings.
The park suffered at least 30 trees toppled with many limbs torn off trunks. Parks Dept responed quickly to keep paths open but after 2 weeks since the storm much timber has still to be removed. Friends very quickly stepped up and arranged a crowd fund raiser to attempt to replace as many trees as possible by new plantings of approx 2m height and at an anticipated cost of £300-500 per tree. Below are some pictures of the damage and a plan of the fallen trees. We need your help to plant replacement trees. Please can you donate to the fundraising campaign by using the following link. https://gofund.me/d307f9f0 We are also looking at the possibility of salvaging and re-using some of the fallen timber for making benches and artworks to act as a reminder of the great storm. This all depends on how much money can be raised. Any donations will be greatly appreciated to help replace some of the great losses the park has suffered. Thanks for your support. FoVP. In October, VPCT held its AGM and the Chair, Steve Nelson made his Chairs Report using the presentation below. The meeting was well attended and for the first time, was open to the public from which there were several people. Steve obviously talked through his presentation and VPCT believes is self explanatory without his words. You can see the work and improvements VPCT, along with FoVP, have made in the park in the last year which we hope you approve. Please click on this panel to open. Thanks. We managed to clear 5 more beds before frostbite kicked in and with the aid of lashings of hot coffee, generously provide by Richard, we all thawed out making a full recovery. We hope everyone will enjoy the formal gardens which we’ll be continuing to work on next year. Thanks for all your support and kind words. FoVP
On Sunday, 10th November, Friends held its annual Remembrance Sunday in the park at the Cenotaph. Once again we were honoured to have DR Yevgen Gorash, Chair of the Glasgow Branch of the Association of Ukranians in Great Britain (AUGB) and the eminent lawyer, Gillian Mawdsley, as our speakers. The event was well attended and this year, again, the weather was lovely late Autumn sunshine and not too cold.
